Exposure to extreme cold for a prolonged period may cause freezing of the nose, fingers, toes, or ears, thus cutting off the circulation to the affected areas. Frostbite areas look white or grayish yellow, and are numb. They should not be rubbed with snow or exposed to intense heat. Areas should be thawed gradually, and a doctor should be consulted for aftercare in extreme cases.
