Obesity and Surgery

A lot of contemplation is required on the part of a surgeon before he performs an operation on a fat patient. It is indeed very difficult to locate the affected part of the body that is hidden under the mass of fat and then to perform an operation on it. The surgeon begins to perspire even in an air conditioned operation theater during such an operation.

Any surgical operation on the body of a fat person is fraught with many dangers. The patient has to be give anesthesia before the operation is performed and it is not only difficult but also dangerous to administer anesthesia to a fat person. The breathing of a fat person is generally shallow as the movement of diaphragm is hindered.

Moreover post surgical recovery is also very slow in fat persons. Their convalescence period is usually very long. A surgical operation is generally effective in the treatment of disease like gall stones, appendicitis, hernia, cancer of the intestines, etc. but it is difficult to perform a surgical operation on a fat person.
