Two Years Or Four Years?
RN programs come in two different forms. You can pursue an associate's degree that can be obtained in 2 years or you can pursue a bachelor's degree that can be obtained in 4 years. Either program can prepare you for the next steps that you have to take to become a registered nurse but they point toward different career paths. A 2 year degree gets you ready to head into the field quickly. The 4 year degree, on the other hand, has you in a position where you know a lot more and you are ready to pursue further education to get an advanced degree later. You can choose whichever one you want to become a registered nurse.
Nursing School
You have to go through the process of selecting which nursing schools to apply to and applying to really get started on becoming an RN. Once you get accepted to a school then you need to do your best to learn all that you can. This knowledge will be what allows you to become an actual registered nurse after you leave nursing school and it will also be the knowledge that you depend on to be a skilled and even a competent nurse.
Clinical Experience
Part of your nursing program will be the acquisition of a certain number of hours of actual clinical experience. You cannot learn everything you need to know to be a nurse by studying in a classroom so you need this experience in the field. In your clinical experience you will learn how to use medical equipment and how to handle your encounters with patients.
Pass The National Council Licensure Examination
This exam is more commonly known as the NCLEX-RN and you must pass it and get your state license or certification in order to become a registered nurse. To be eligible to take the exam you will have to have a degree in nursing but if you are following these steps then you will have done that by this point. Again passing the exam is possible whether you pursued a 2 or 4 year degree as long as you have learned enough of what you need to know. There is a plethora of study aids available to help you prepare for the NCLEX-RN.
When you break the process of becoming a registered nurse down into steps then it looks easy. All you have to do is take on one step at a time and in a few years you will be ready to pass the NCLEX-RN and become a registered nurse. The first and most important step is just deciding to do it.
